Ishaqzaade received positive to mixed reviews from critics. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, saying that "On the whole, ISHAQZAADE, a volatile and intense story with ample doses of fanatical romance, should appeal to a pan-India audience. This broadly engaging love story has a winsome pair who deliver dexterous performances, besides popular music and several poignant moments, which should appeal to fans of mainstream films. Go for it!"[11] Mrigank Dhaniwala of Koimoi gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, commenting that "On the whole, Ishaqzaade is an entertaining fare which works on the strength of its first half and the performances."[12] Khalid Mohamed of Deccan Chronicle gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, concluding that "Ishaqzaade kicks off weakly and has its share of the deja pooh. Gradually, though, it gets under your skin..and rocks. Absolutely See-grade."[13]
Rachit Gupta of Filmfare gave the movie 3 stars out of 5, quoting that "On the face of it, this is a fantastic Indian adaptation of Romeo And Juliet. But if you’ve ever loved someone without a sense of inhibition, then deeper in the recesses of its story Ishaqzaade is a saga of love being more important than life and death."[14] Daily Bhaskar gave the movie 3 stars out of 5, writing that "Brilliant performance by the lead cast, an ecstatic climax which breaks the typical ‘happily ever after’ ending, is surely one of the top reasons to visit your nearest theatre. People from metros might find it difficult to relate to the culture or political drama that involves frequent gun-firing. Arjun and Parineeti’s chemistry will remind one of the ‘Ek-Duje Ke Liye’ genre of love stories from Bollywood."[15] Shomini Sen of Zee News gave the movie 3 stars out of 5, noting that "Habib Faisal’s earlier film ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ had captured the Delhi and Punjabi culture well. In ‘Ishaqzaade’, he captures a small town in northern India and its typical nuances well."[16] Kunal Guha of Yahoo gave the movie 2.5 stars out of 5, explaining that "Don’t go to watch this film hoping to be blown away by the story or the script or the unexpected ‘kahani mein twist’. There is very little that you’ve not seen somewhere before. Go for this film to slip into the mood and become a reckless lover with little care for repercussions or consequences. Go to watch this film to become an ‘Ishaqzaade’."[17] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the movie 2.5 stars out of 5, saying that "'Ishaqzaade' benefits considerably from Amit Trivedi's excellent soundtrack and Hemant Chaturvedi's sharp cinematography. Faisal creates a believable world with charming characters, and his leads have crackling chemistry. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Habib Faisal's 'Ishaqzaade'. It's far from perfect, but you won't be bored."[18] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the movie 2.5 stars out of five stars, writing that "If only Arjun Kapoor's dialogue delivery had greater punch and Parineeti Chopra could pull off the emotional moments without going shrill, Ishaqzaade would have been a markedly better film."[19] Mansha Rastogi of Now Running gave the movie 2 stars out of 5, concluding that "To sum it up, Ishaqzaade had the potential to turn into a blockbuster but sadly, the opportunity got wasted."[20] Blessy Chettiar of DNA India gave the movie 2 starts out of 5, quoting that "Watch if you must, go expecting nothing. You might just enjoy Ishaqzaade."[21] Raja Sen of Rediff gave the movie 2 stars out of 5, stating that "The second half of Ishaqzaade lets it down. On the whole, Ishaqzaade, despite its artistry, deserves no pardon."[22] Movie Theatrical Trailer : Ishaqzaade
